The Yuma Territorial Prison was built in 1875 as part of Arizona's bid for statehood. While the prison was originally slated for Phoenix, Mayor Jose Maria Redondo and his aid R.B. Kelly used some clever political maneuvering to ensure its construction in Yuma; they simply changed the named city on all official documentation and pushed it through before anyone was the wiser!
