An urban legend tells the tale of Madora Ingalls quelling a riot by manning the prison's battery gun. The truth is that yarn was spun nearly a hundred years after her husband retired from the position of prison superintendent. Madora's lasting legacy is much more poignant; she ensured those under her husband's charge were given opportunity for education, treated humanely, and even personally tended to ailing prisoners. Hers is a rare instance of Old West lore, wherein the reality is nobler, and more courageous than the legend.
